"Sidai": meaning beautiful, is from the Maa language spoken in Masaai communities originating in eastern parts of the continent, with high concentrations in Kenya and Tanzania. Masaai communities, like many communities on the continent, regularly engage in body modifications. Everyday clothing consists of adorning themselves in naturally made beads, jewels, and stones. The Sidai zine honours this natural and deliberate action of taking charge and adorning our bodies.
Ameerah Craig honoured me by asking if I could be the participating photographer and main editor of the upcoming Sidai Zine expected to be published for the York United Black Students' Alliance during February.
